Manual massage is a very old form of treatment. Data on the application of this method date back several thousand years.

Manual massage consists of the application of various hand movements performed by a physiotherapist-masseur on the patient’s body. There are several interventions such as smoothing, kneading, rubbing, tapping and vibrating. With massage, we cause stimulation of certain receptors through which we get reflex responses – reactions of tissues and organs. Also, the swelling of lymph and venous blood is enhanced, and at the same time, the expansion of arterial blood vessels and activation of capillaries occurs. This results in an increase in local metabolism and the removal of decaying metabolic products. At the same time, it causes a reduction in local swelling. Especially important is the effect of massage on the reduction of pain and muscle tension, as well as on the reduction of fatigue, muscle relaxation and general sedation.

Manual therapeutic massage is used in the following conditions: soft tissue injuries of the locomotor system (muscles, ligaments…), joint contractures after injuries, local swelling, lymphedema, post-traumatic scars, shoulder and hip periarthritis, neck and lumbar pain syndromes…

Massage is also used as an introduction to kinesiotherapy exercises.

Conditions in which manual massage cannot be applied are: increased body temperature, inflammatory processes of the skin, blood and lymphatic vessels, varicose veins…

Manual massage can be general, segmental and local. General massage is applied to the whole body, in a certain order: first on the legs, then on the hands, then on the back, and finally on the head and neck, from the upper to the lower segments. Local massage is applied to certain parts of the body: legs, arms, back, abdomen, head and neck. Segmental massage is applied to individual anatomical structures with specific clinical problems.
